Long-serving licensees and welcoming staff in bustling country pub with well liked food using their own chutneys and pickles and home-grown summer salad
Description Now joined by their son as head chef, the long-serving licensees continue to run this friendly inn with considerable enthusiasm. The quarry tiled L-shaped middle bar has leather-seated bar stools, upholstered settles and dark brown kitchen chairs around sturdy old tables, old local photographs above the corner log fire, and hop-draped black beams in the dark peach ceiling. Opening off one side is a skylit sun room with wicker armchairs around more old tables; the other end has a games room with darts, pool, juke box and games machine; also cribbage. Greene King Old Speckled Hen, Marstons Pedigree and Wye Valley Bitter on handpump, farm ciders and perry and a dozen wines by the glass; obliging service, and disabled access. A roomy and attractive stripped-stone raftered restaurant extension has a Sunday lunchtime carvery. There are well sited tables on the terrace or on the neat prettily planted lawn.

Using their own grown produce (and that of their neighbours and family) and other carefully sought out local producers, the enjoyable food might include sandwiches, ploughman’s, soup, pork and pheasant pâté with spiced damsons, thai-style fishcakes with dipping sauce, cod fillet wrapped in bacon with blue cheese sauce, steak in ale pie, butternut squash and spinach risotto, pork fillet and crispy pork belly with plum sauce, lamb curry and puddings such as plum and almond crumble and damson gin crème brulée; they make their own preserves to sell: marmalade, raspberry, strawberry and damson jams, spiced pears and plums, beetroot and horseradish relish, pickled walnuts and apple and ginger chutney. Starters/Snacks: £3.95 to £5.50. Main Courses: £9.25 to £14.95. Puddings: £3.95
